LOCAL NOTES : Vanguards Upset Kenyan Soccer Team

The Orange County Vanguards upset the A.F.C. Leopards, 1-0, in a soccer match in Nairobi, Kenya, on a second-half goal by Ed Brown.

The Vanguard defense, led by Mark Vogel and goalkeeper Diego Reyes, shut out a team that included seven members of the Kenyan national team.

The Newport Dukes’ Trevor Kronemann has been named the male co-most valuable player of the World TeamTennis along with Jimmy Connors, who plays for Phoenix. Kronemann, formerly of UC Irvine, helped the Dukes to a 13-1 record.

Martina Navratilova, who plays for Atlanta, was named the female most valuable player. Greg Patton of the Dukes was named the coach of the year.
