Driving enthusiasts converge on Rolling Hills Estates this weekend in a clash of horse, mule and pony power.
The occasion is the 1993 California Classic Combined Driving event, a three-day carriage-driving contest scheduled to start today at Ernie Howlett Park.
Dressage is the first phase of the event, which is sponsored by the Heels & Wheels Driving Club. Dressage features compulsory maneuvers that test the drivers’ command and the obedience of the carriage horses, mules or ponies.
On Saturday, carriage drivers will compete in a cross-country marathon consisting of trot and walk sections through varied terrain and hazards. Buses will take spectators to the cross-country course from Ernie Howlett Park.
In Sunday’s final phase, to be held in the park, carriage drivers and their animals must negotiate an obstacle course dotted with markers that topple if nicked even slightly.
Winners of the three-day event will be the contestants who accumulate the fewest penalty points in the various categories.
