COME AND LISTEN TO A STORY. . .: A Geffen Records executive is planning to mount a protest over film director Penelope Spheeris’ allegedly rejecting the band Jackyl as the performer of “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” for the new movie version of “The Beverly Hillbillies.” Jackyl had been in final negotiations for the honor, until Spheeris told Geffen representatives that she had seen lead singer Jesse Dupree in the August issue of Playgirl, clad only in cowboy boots. She said that it was not an image she wanted associated with the movie.

Geffen spokeswoman Bryn Bridenthal calls it a case of sexual discrimination, since Erika Eleniak, who plays Ellie Mae in the film, was Playboy’s July, 1989 Playmate of the Month.

“We’ll make a big stink,” Bridenthal says, although just what form the protest will take remains uncertain. “Our thought is, (why is it) OK for the woman to be naked in a magazine but not a man?”

BMG Records sources say that Spheeris also rejected their band, Green Jelly, for reasons of taste. The band’s broad slapstick rock satire includes a character covered in excrement. The costumed band, though, is still apparently in contention to contribute another song to the soundtrack.

Spheeris and representatives of 20th Century Fox, which is releasing the movie, would not comment on the matter.
