Sunday in the park will be a musical experience for folks in El Segundo, Manhattan Beach and Torrance.

On the bandstand in El Segundo’s Library Park, the music starts at 2 p.m. with the Pandemonium Steel Drum Band. The six-piece group consists of four steel-drum players and a two-man rhythm section of drums and electric bass.

Led by Michael Carney, director of percussion studies at Cal State Long Beach, the group plays a range of selections from traditional Caribbean to light jazz and popular movie theme songs. This is the last in the city’s series of free summer concerts.

A steel drum will also resound when Manhattan Beach’s own Dietz Brothers play their city’s Polliwog Park amphitheater at 5 p.m. The brothers play everything from Bach preludes to Duke Ellington classics. This year they’ve added Caribbean music, which is where the steel drum comes in.

Well-known to area residents, the Dietz Brothers were drawn to musical careers after seeing the Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Today, they operate Dietz Brothers Music, where they give lessons and sell musical instruments.

Food and beverages are now available at Manhattan Beach’s Sunday concerts, but public park rules prohibit alcohol.

The third concert, in Torrance from 1 to 3 p.m., features the 32nd Street Jazz Band at Wilson Park. Torrance’s summer concerts, held in various city parks, are sponsored by the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.
