BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Saberhagen Will Have Knee Surgery
New York Met pitcher Bret Saberhagen, who won’t be punished for his trashing of the Shea Stadium clubhouse Friday night, also won’t be pitching for a while.
Tests Saturday showed he has torn cartilage in his left knee. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday, the team said.
Saberhagen was scheduled to start Saturday’s second game of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Mets said his left knee locked up in the bullpen before the game.
The injury is not believed to be related to Saberhagen’s tantrum.
