MacGregor Advances in Qualifying

Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate, took a step toward reaching the main draw of the $375,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles by defeating Stacey Jellen of Calabasas, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round qualifying match Saturday at the Manhattan Country Club.

MacGregor will play Tracey Morton of Australia in a second-round match today. The winner will meet the Larissa Schaerer-Tessa Price winner for a spot in the 56-player main draw.

Play begins at 9 a.m.

Organizers also released the pairings for Monday’s main draw, which includes three players with South Bay ties.

Hall of Famer Tracy Austin of Rolling Hills, playing her third tournament this year, will meet 12th-seeded Gigi Fernandez. Austin won two matches at the Evert Cup in February, her first sanctioned tournament since 1989.

Lindsay Davenport, a former Chadwick standout, is seeded 11th and will meet Claudia Porwik.

Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills will play 15th-seeded Lisa Raymond, the 1992 and 1993 NCAA women’s singles champion who reached Wimbledon’s fourth round this year.

Monday’s order of play is scheduled to be announced tonight.
