City Council Clout
Like many legislative bodies, the Los Angeles City Council performs much of its work through committees, and the committee chairmen can wield considerable power, speeding up proposed measures or stalling them.
Historically, the Public Safety, Budget & Finance, and Planing & Land Use Management panels have been the most influential committees.

City Council--A graphic in the Thursday edition of The Times incorrectly reported membership of the Los Angeles City Council’s Community Redevelopment and Housing Committee. The members are Richard Alarcon, Zev Yaroslavsky and Mark Ridley-Thomas. Telephone numbers for City Council members Laura Chick, Hal Bernson and Rita Walters also were incorrect. Chick’s City Hall office number is (213) 485-3486, Bernson’s Sylmar office number is (818) 989-8504 and Walter’s City Hall number is (213) 485-3351.
Committee assignments are made every two years and new assignments take effect Monday.

When I talk about public safety, it has to include a preventive component such as youth programs and gang-prevention programs.”

On the other hand, you’re not going to get people to locate jobs in neighborhoods that are not safe.”
