The Atlanta Braves hit five home runs and held the Reds to one hit for a 14-0 victory at Cincinnati.

“We can’t hit any better than that, and we can’t pitch any better than that,” Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said.

David Justice hit his 100th career homer and his third in three nights to start the Braves’ second five-homer game of the season.

Steve Avery (13-4) and three relievers held the Reds to Chris Sabo’s infield single in the fifth.

Fred McGriff hit a three-run homer in the third, his 26th, and Deion Sanders hit a solo homer in the fourth.

Ron Gant’s two-run homer, his 29th, against Bruce Ruffin capped a six-run fifth inning. Sid Bream added a two-run homer in the ninth against Jerry Spradlin, the Reds’ third rookie pitcher of the game.

San Francisco 4, Chicago 1--Kirt Manwaring homered and Willie McGee drove in two runs without a hit, leading Trevor Wilson and the Giants to their fourth consecutive victory and eighth in 11 games at Chicago.

Wilson (6-4), making his first appearance since going on the disabled list July 2 because of an inflamed left shoulder, pitched six innings, giving up two hits and one run.

The Giants went ahead in the second inning when Matt Williams doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored as McGee grounded out.

Chicago made the score 1-1 in the fourth when Ryne Sandberg walked and scored on a double by Steve Buechele, who had both hits against Wilson.

The Giants scored in the sixth when they loaded the bases on a single by Robby Thompson, a double by Will Clark and an intentional walk to Barry Bonds. McGee then walked to force in Thompson.

Pittsburgh 8, Florida 3--Zane Smith won his third consecutive start and Andy Tomberlin’s first major league hit, a two-run single, highlighted a five-run fifth inning for the Pirates at Pittsburgh.

Smith (3-4) gave up 10 hits in eight innings, the fourth consecutive start in which he has pitched at least seven innings.

Philadelphia 9, New York 5--Kim Batiste hit a grand slam against reliever Anthony Young with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Phillies at Philadelphia.

Pete Schourek relieved for the Mets in the ninth and walked John Kruk. Pinch-hitter Mickey Morandini flied out, and Darren Daulton struck out before Young (1-14) relieved.

Pete Incaviglia walked, and Jim Eisenreich grounded to shortstop for what appeared to be the last out. But Kevin Baez threw wildly to first, Kruk scoring the tying run.

After Kevin Stocker was walked intentionally to load the bases, Batiste hit an 0-and-1 pitch for his fifth homer.

“Oh, man, I still can’t believe it,” Batiste said. “I can’t explain the feeling and it’s still going on.”

Batiste said he couldn’t remember ever having hit a grand slam.

Colorado 5, Houston 3--Charlie Hayes hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning at Houston, extending the Rockies’ season-high winning streak to six games.

The Astros took a 3-1 lead into the ninth, helped by Craig Biggio’s two-run homer, but couldn’t hold on.

Doug Jones (3-9), who had converted 10 consecutive save opportunities, walked Roberto Mejia, and Daryl Boston followed with his third hit of the game. Hayes then hit his 18th homer.

Montreal 4, St. Louis 3--Pitcher Dennis Martinez hit a pinch sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give the Expos a victory at Montreal.

Marquis Grissom led off the 11th against Joe Magrane (8-10) with an infield single and stole second. Grissom took third on Larry Walker’s groundout, and Moises Alou and Mike Lansing were intentionally walked to bring up Martinez, who pinch-hit for reliever John Wetteland (8-3).

Martinez hit a fly ball to right field, easily scoring the speedy Grissom.
