SOUTH : Site Sought for Postal Facilities

Share

The U.S. Postal Service is seeking to buy or lease land on which to build a new Greenmead Post Office. The old post office was destroyed during last year’s riots.

Plans call for the Postal Service to build two buildings--one for a post office, the other for Greenmead letter carriers to sort mail--totaling 180,000 square feet to replace the structure at 12005 S. Avalon Blvd. That building caught fire when a liquor store adjacent to the building was set ablaze during the riots, said Postal Service spokesman David Mazer.

The Postal Service cannot rebuild on the Avalon Boulevard site because “the owner didn’t want to rebuild and we were leasing the property,” Mazer said. Property records identify the owner as Jong Kyu Choi of La Crescenta. Choi could not be reached for comment.

The new site is expected to be between Century Boulevard and 120th Street.
