LOS ANGELES : LAPD on Watch as Detroit Police Trial Nears Verdict
As the trial of Detroit police officers accused of using excessive force nears completion, Los Angeles officials are bracing for the possibility of trouble.
According to an internal Los Angeles Police Department memo obtained by The Times, representatives of the Detroit Police Department will notify local authorities when a verdict is imminent. The Detroit case stems from the beating of Malice Green, a young black man who died as a result of his injuries.
“It is unknown at this time if the verdicts will have any impact on Los Angeles,” Deputy Chief Bayan Lewis said in an Aug. 16 memo to geographic bureau commanding officers. “However, experience dictates that there is a potential for problems and to take appropriate steps toward a stage of readiness.”
Lewis advised officers to review their contingency plans in case “rapid deployment of personnel and equipment” are needed.
