NAGGING DOUBTS: Although horse licenses issued in the Valley have declined since 1990, nobody knows exactly how many horses there are. The citywide estimate ranges as high as 100,000--about one for every 35 humans (B16). . . . Although not as common as it once was, it’s still legal to keep a horse in many Valley communities, if your yard’s big enough.
DUMP SCHOLARS: Before he stepped down after 32 years as the voice of the northeast Valley (and penny-watchers everywhere) on the L.A. City Council, Ernani Bernardi set up a $1-million scholarship fund, annoying Lopez Canyon dump neighbors by diverting money earmarked for them. His council successor, Richard Alarcon, shrank the Bernardi Scholarship by almost 75% Tuesday (B1). . . . Scholarship requirement: hearing a talk on the dump’s history and Bernardi’s fight against it.
PLAYING THE FIELD: Under remarkably loose junior college recruiting rules, a player can actually enroll at more than one school. Case in point: Davis Delmatoff. The former Hart High quarterback signed up at both Valley and Pierce. . . . On Monday, as practice began, Delmatoff ended the recruiting battle by showing up at Pierce (C8).
BROKEN PROMISE? Two Lancaster boys have been charged with putting a cross bearing racial slurs in a black couple’s yard (B1). A minister and Lancaster lawmaker, who counseled the teen-agers, had concealed their identities because he believed they repented. Now, he says the FBI broke a promise he relayed that no action would be taken if they talked voluntarily. . . . No comment from authorities.
COURT TO COURSE: Lynn Shackelford helped UCLA win three national basketball championships in the 1960s. These days, the Burroughs High graduate operates the Sinaloa Golf Course, a par-three layout in Simi Valley (C8). . . . Imaginative programs are drawing more players to the little course.
