Raider Coach Art Shell has been hospitalized for treatment of a diabetic condition, but is expected to be back on the job by Thursday.

In Shell’s absence, assistant coach Terry Robiskie is running practices here.

Shell, 46, left the Raiders’ training camp Monday night and checked into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles to undergo a series of tests.

“It was excellent that we were able to get it under control so early, under rapid control,” said Stephen Corday, the specialist in internal medicine who is treating Shell. “I think it is something that can be controlled with diet and pills.”

Shell has a family history of this condition.

“He should be at a full energy level (Wednesday),” Corday said of Shell. “He’s an excellent patient. He’s educated and he wants to learn about this.”

Shell grew concerned when he became sluggish and noticed certain abnormalities.

He kept his condition quiet, but went to an Oxnard hospital Monday, between the morning and afternoon practices. When initial tests there confirmed that there was a problem, he made plans to leave the team Monday night.

Shell informed the team of his impending departure at a regularly scheduled evening meeting.

“He told us that this ran through his family and that it was time to pay attention to his body,” quarterback Vince Evans said.

“It was a shock to everybody. It was an emotional moment. All our prayers are with him.

“You look at recent events, like this and what happened to Michael Jordan’s father--not that this is that severe--and it makes you aware of things. You look at faith, family and your job, and this kind of thing reminds you what’s important in life.”

Veteran defensive lineman Howie Long said that, “because (Shell) got it under control now, it could be a blessing in disguise.”

Said Robiskie: “He’s a very private person. I don’t know him to talk about things. With macho guys, when they hurt inside, they keep it inside. He’s a proud person. Always has been, always will be.”

If all goes according to plan, Shell will be at practice Thursday morning and then accompany the team on its flight to Indianapolis for Friday night’s exhibition game against the Colts.
