Triple-A Vancouver pitcher Mark Holzemer has received some generous birthday presents in his life, but Friday’s, he said, was the ultimate.

Holzemer was informed that he is being called up by the Angels and will make his major league debut tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Holzemer, 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA, replaces rookie Hilly Hathaway, who was put on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his left shoulder.

Hathaway said he believes the soreness is caused because he has pitched 127 2/3 innings this season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in 1990, and never has pitched more than 129 innings in a season.

Starter Joe Magrane couldn’t help but feel awkward when he put on a uniform other than the St. Louis Cardinals’ for the first time in his career.

“I couldn’t help but feel melancholy about the whole thing,” said Magrane, who will make his American League debut Sunday. “I’ve had a lot of great memories in St. Louis, and I hope this will have a rejuvenating effect.

“But I know my arm isn’t a variable anymore. My arm feels totally healthy. Now, I hope I can make the organization look smart.”

X-rays on Angel reliever Mike Butcher’s right elbow were negative and he could be available to pitch today. Butcher pitched to only one batter Thursday when he felt a muscle cramp in his elbow. . . . Second baseman Damion Easley will have surgery Tuesday at Centinela Hospital on his right shin. . . . First baseman J.T. Snow, batting .431 with five homers and 19 runs batted in during his last 14 games at Vancouver, is expected to rejoin the Angels on Tuesday. . . . The Angels will lose money again this season, Angel President Richard Brown said, which could affect their off-season moves. “The fans determine a lot of what we can spend,” Brown said.
