NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Padres Score 13 in First, Defeat Cardinals, 17-4

The San Diego Padres set a club record with 13 runs, nine hits and 16 batters in the first inning and had five homers in the game to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 17-4, Tuesday night at San Diego.

The Padres (48-78) sent the Cardinals to their fifth consecutive defeat and dropped them 10 games behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. The Cardinals have lost nine of 13.

Tim Teufel, Phil Plantier, Phil Clark, Archi Cianfrocco and Brad Ausmus hit homers as the Padres matched a club record. The Padres also hit five homers against St. Louis on April 18, a 10-6 victory.

Clark drove in four runs, including three in the first inning, Teufel drove in three and Plantier hit a three-run homer.

Padre starter Andy Ashby (2-7) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings for his second victory in his last three decisions.

Teufel homered to drive in the first two runs and later had a run-scoring single in the first, Plantier capped the outburst with a three-run homer and Clark had a double and single in the inning.

Ausmus added an RBI double, Tony Gwynn a two-run single and Derek Bell an RBI single as the Padres tied a club record for most runs in game set on July 18, 1989, against Pittsburgh.

The Padres, who scored five runs in the first in a 7-5 victory over St. Louis on Monday night, used four extra-base hits and four walks to produce eight runs against rookie starter Allen Watson, who entered the game 6-0 with a 2.86 earned-run average.

Watson, whose ERA is now 4.24, got only two outs before leaving.

The previous San Diego record for runs in an inning was nine against Cincinnati in the first inning on May 3, 1969, the Padres’ first season.

The Boston Red Sox established the modern major league record with 17 in the seventh inning against Detroit on June 18, 1953. The Brooklyn Dodgers hold the National League mark with 15 runs in the first against Cincinnati on May 21, 1952.

The Padres’ previous best for hits in an inning was eight, done twice, most recently April 19, 1982, against San Francisco. The mark for most batters was 13 against the Dodgers in 1982.

Philadelphia 4, Colorado 2--Danny Jackson became the fifth Philadelphia starter to win 10 or more games, pitching 7 2/3 strong innings at Philadelphia.

Jackson (10-9) gave up four hits, struck out two and walked one. Mitch Williams gave up a run, but got the last three outs for his 36th save.

Jackson, 31, joined Tommy Greene (12-3), Terry Mulholland (11-9), Ben Rivera (11-6) and Curt Schilling (10-6) as Phillies with 10 or more victories. The only other time the Phillies had five starters with 10 or more victories was in 1932.

Chicago 6, Montreal 5--Randy Myers earned his 37th save to tie Bruce Sutter’s 14-year-old club record at Montreal.

Dan Plesac (1-1), the fourth Chicago pitcher, worked one inning for the victory.

The Cubs scored twice in the fifth against Expo starter Ken Hill (7-5) to take a 6-5 lead.

Houston 4, Florida 0--Craig Biggio hit a three-run homer, and Greg Swindell struck out 10 in seven innings, combining with two relievers on a six-hitter at Miami.

New York 5, Cincinnati 4--Jeff McKnight hit a pinch triple in the ninth inning and scored the winning run at New York when reliever Kevin Wickander threw a wild pitch.

The Mets ended a four-game losing streak despite squandering a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. The Reds have lost 11 of 14.
