Fight Adult Stores

Sometimes there are problems that elected officials cannot solve. As I watched the discussion concerning Oxnard’s adult business ordinance, I could see how the elected officials were grappling with what would be the correct thing to do: Take the risk of lawsuits and pass an ordinance that wouldn’t pass muster or pass an ordinance that the residents wouldn’t like but would hold up in court?

Perhaps what is needed is for the community to take the issue head-on. If the residents of our community will not tolerate these business establishments, then the owners will see that there is no profit to gain.

One of the best strategies would be to call for a boycott. It is an issue of supply and demand; if the owners start seeing less demand, then we will see less supply.

Now, obviously, the individuals protesting the ordinance are not frequenting the establishments, but someone is. I suggest we put as much energy into community pressure as is being put into the ordinance to make the establishments less profitable. This may sound simplistic but I believe if community pressure is applied to the owners, they will not like the public attention it gets--nor would the individuals who frequent the establishment like the attention either.
