AGOURA HILLS : Restaurant Smoking Ban Is Approved
By a unanimous vote of its council, Agoura Hills this week became the latest city to ban smoking in restaurants.
Like Pasadena, Los Angeles, Long Beach and a growing number of cities statewide, Agoura Hills banned smoking inside all establishments that serve food, but continued to allow smokers to light up in bar and outdoor eating areas.
The council approved the anti-smoking measure at its regular Wednesday meeting. Unlike some of the region’s larger cities, Agoura Hills imposed the smoking ban without residents’ opposition. The measure was approved about a month after it was proposed.
“We never had any negative comments on the ordinance,” City Manager Terry Matz said. “Agoura Hills is a community that is very health conscious and sensitive to quality of life issues, and we were able to put this through smoothly.”
When the law takes effect Sept. 25, every restaurant in Agoura Hills will be required to post “No Smoking” signs inside. There are about 50 establishments that serve food in the city, according to Brian Torsney of the Public Works Department.
Failure to enforce the smoking ban is punishable by a fine of up to $100 for a first offense, up to $200 for a second offense and up to $500 for a third.
