LOS ANGELES : DWP Warns Strike Could Cut Off Electric Service

Anticipating a strike, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has mailed letters to residents who depend on life support equipment and businesses, warning them that a possible work stoppage in the coming weeks could disrupt service.

“We are notifying our customers of the possibility of a work stoppage in order to provide them the opportunity to consider precautionary measures,” DWP General Manager Daniel W. Waters said.

After more than a year of negotiations, the union representing 8,000 DWP employees voted last month to authorize their leadership to call a strike. Working without a contract for 11 months, employees have sought a raise but the DWP has refused, citing the city’s fiscal problems.
