Dave Krieg threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Fred Jones and led Kansas City to two third-quarter touchdowns as the Chiefs defeated the New England Patriots, 27-20, at Foxboro, Mass.

A crowd of 46,501--the largest for a preseason game at Foxboro since 1987--came to see a battle between the quarterback of the ‘80s and the NFL’s top draft choice this year.

After watching Joe Montana lead the Chiefs to a 10-0 first-quarter lead, rookie Drew Bledsoe led the Patriots on two touchdown drives in the second quarter.

Kevin Butler’s third field goal of the game, a 53-yarder with no time left, gave the Chicago Bears a 23-21 victory over Dallas at Chicago. The Cowboys had taken a 21-20 lead when third-string quarterback Jason Garrett threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Williams with a minute left. Troy Aikman, who played only in the first half in his second appearance since returning from back surgery, directed the Cowboys to a 14-0 lead. Aikman, who completed 14 of 18 passes for 163 yards, moved the Cowboys 85 yards after the opening kickoff, throwing 41 yards to Michael Irvin for a 7-0 lead.

Johnny Bailey scored on his first two carries and rookie Ron Moore gained 122 yards in 17 carries at Tempe, Ariz., as the Phoenix Cardinals wrapped up the exhibition season with a 34-9 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Jason Hanson made a 52-yard field goal with 31 seconds to play at New Orleans, giving the Detroit Lions a 17-16 victory over the Saints.

Brett Favre directed three long scoring drives at Green Bay, one in the final two minutes of the first half, as the Packers routed the Indianapolis Colts, 41-10, to avoid a winless exhibition season. Favre completed 23 of 36 passes for 235 yards. Quarterback Jeff George, who reported to the Colts last week after a holdout that cost him $144,000 in fines, entered the game with 8:50 to play in the first half. He played one series, completing three of five passes for 38 yards.

Craig Erickson ignited Tampa Bay’s offense with two touchdown passes and Michael Husted kicked three field goals at Tampa as the Buccaneers overcame a 17-point deficit to beat the Cleveland Browns, 23-20. Erickson launched the comeback after Cleveland’s Vinny Testaverde, facing his former teammates for the first time, tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jackson to give the Browns a 20-3 lead.

Hearst, Cardinals Agree to Terms

The NFL’s final first-round pick came to terms Friday when the Phoenix Cardinals and running back Garrison Hearst reached agreement on a multiyear contract.

General Manager Larry Wilson said Hearst would practice today and play in the season opener Sept. 5 at Philadelphia. “There’s not much coaching in teaching a guy how to run,” Wilson said.

Hearst will reportedly average about $2.5 million a season.
