CRENSHAW : Bigger Police Force Is Focus of Meeting
Action for Grassroots Empowerment and Neighborhood Development Alternatives, a local community group that addresses issues in riot-affected areas, will host a public meeting Tuesday night with Deputy Mayor William Violante.
The primary reason for the meeting, scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., is to address community concerns about Mayor Richard Riordan’s plan to hire 3,000 more police officers, said group organizer Adrianne Shropshire.
“People are worried that getting to the root of crime, as opposed to just beefing up the police force, is no longer part of the debate. The reforms recommended by the Christopher Commission aren’t being talked about,” she said.
Shropshire said some of the issues that will be raised at Tuesday’s meeting include how Riordan plans to come up with funds to hire the new officers, the mayor’s financial commitment to addressing the root causes of crime in urban areas and Violante’s position on police reform.
The organization was created in the wake of last year’s riots to ensure the participation of South Los Angeles residents in policy-making and resource allocation related to rebuilding the city.
