Dispute Ends in Shooting
An Alhambra woman was shot early Saturday as she sat in a friend’s car, apparently because another motorist was peeved over the way they were driving, police said.
Monika Chavez, 44, was shot in the buttocks and ribs at about 2:20 a.m. while stopped in a blue Mercedes-Benz near her friend’s house on the 800 block of South Brea Boulevard, according to police.
She was later listed in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, hospital spokeswoman Jan Inlow said.
Brea Police Sgt. Dave Carlock said the shooting happened because another motorist was angry over how Chavez’s unidentified friend, a Brea resident, was driving.
“Just, basically, someone didn’t like her driving,” Carlock said.
The incident reportedly began near the intersection of the Orange and Riverside freeways, where the Mercedes driver changed lanes, angering the driver of a small, dark, two-door sedan, Carlock said.
The sedan followed the Mercedes for several miles off the freeway and then riders in the two cars bickered over the driving before shots were fired, he said.
The driver of the Mercedes was unharmed, and a man and a woman in the small sedan fled, Carlock said.
