PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : NFL EXHIBITIONS : Musgrave Impressive as 49ers Beat Chargers
Bill Musgrave, playing in place of the injured Steve Young and Steve Bono, threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Chargers, 30-14, Saturday night at San Francisco.
The 49ers may start the season without Young, whose broken thumb might not heal in time for the season-opener Sunday against Pittsburgh. Bono is expected to be sidelined for five weeks because of a separated shoulder.
Charger quarterback Stan Humphries was hit by linebacker Martin Harrison and the preliminary diagnosis was a bruised right shoulder.
Rookie running back Terry Kirby caught seven passes and scored two touchdowns to lead the Miami Dolphins to a 23-17 victory over the New York Giants at Miami. . . . Seattle’s Dave McCloughan returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and backup quarterback Stan Gelbaugh led two second-half scoring drives as the Seahawks posted a 20-10 victory over the Oilers at Houston.
