NEW MUPPETS, NEW ADDRESS FOR ‘SESAME STREET’
Hard to believe, but Bert, Ernie and Big Bird turn 25 this year. In November, “Sesame Street” will introduce a new location “around the corner” along with some new Muppets and a new comedian, Ruth Buzzi (“Laugh-In”).
The new location features a playground, a thrift shop, a dance studio and a new Muppet hotel called the Furry Arms. New Muppets will reflect the producers’ emphasis on family issues.
Living at the new location will be puppets Zoe, an excitable little girl monster, and the Squirrelles, a trio of female squirrels who sing Motown songs. Fish Muppet Wanda Cousteau will bring her portable fish bowl “around the corner,” and will be joined by baby Natasha’s parents and the Asian-American owner of a dance studio. Kingston Livingston III, a young African-American, briefly introduced in a previous show, will join the crowd. Buzzi will be proprietor of a thrift shop that offers items with fairy-tale backgrounds. “Sesame Street’s” new musical director will be adding original songs and dance breaks as well as interactive song-and-dance segments.
Celebrity guests scheduled this season include Maya Angelou, Marilyn Horne, Little Richard, the Neville Brothers, Marisa Tomei and Kristi Yamaguchi.
