PORT HUENEME : Council Considers Lot for Bike Rentals

The Port Hueneme City Council, after a public hearing tonight, will consider leasing out the parking lot of the vacant Dorill B. Wright Cultural Center for a bicycle rental operation.

Officials believe the three-month trial lease with Port Hueneme R.V. and Marine Storage would help prevent vandalism and graffiti at the center, which was closed by a budget cut, said Greg C. Brown, an assistant city planner.

Under terms of the proposed lease, the rental firm would pay the city 10% of its gross revenues, but Brown emphasized that financial considerations were of secondary importance to the city.

“We want to reuse an underutilized resource, encourage tourism and benefit local businesses,” Brown said.

The city has received letters from three residents of Surfside IV, a condominium complex behind the cultural center, who protested the presence of a commercial enterprise in a largely residential area.

Brown responded to the concern by saying the cultural center is intended for public use and a bicycle rental stand would further that goal.
