BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Finley, Langston Eschew Extra Rest

Share

Starters Chuck Finley and Mark Langston have nothing more to prove. There are no incentives to be met and their contracts are fully guaranteed for 1994.

But they told Manager Buck Rodgers in a private meeting that they want to continue to pitch every fifth day until the end of the season.

As a result, Rodgers has decided to start Finley on Thursday, Langston on Friday, and moved back Joe Magrane’s start three days until Saturday. The changes are expected to be announced today.

“Buck told us that he was going to give us an extra day of rest this week,” Finley (14-10) said, “but we told him we shouldn’t be moved back. We feel fine, and want to keep pitching on our regular turn. We want to keep going strong until the season stops.”

Finley (14-10) and Langston (14-6) still have the opportunity to win 20 games this season, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by an Angel since Nolan Ryan in 1974. Langston also is vying for his first earned-run average title, leading the league at 2.78.

The busiest man in the Angel organization this season has been Lewis Yocum, who oversaw shortstop Gary DiSarcina’s right thumb surgery, removed the plaster cast and stitches on second baseman Damion Easley’s right calf while placing him in a walking cast, and set up an appointment to examine starter Russ Springer’s back today.

DiSarcina had three pins placed in his thumb because of the significant bone chip, but there was no ligament damage. He is expected to be in a cast for four to six weeks.

Said Easley: “I feel a lot better than I thought I would. They said I could be able to jog again by the third week of September. I’m glad it’s over and done with. I’ll be just fine.”

Springer will undergo a cat-scan today on the cracked facet joint of his back, and if it has healed, he will begin throwing this weekend.

Starter Hilly Hathaway, who is on the disabled list because of a strained left shoulder:, played light toss from 75 feet away, and might begin throwing off the mound Saturday.

Said pitcher Scott Lewis, who is on the disabled list because of a pinched muscle in his right shoulder: “I’ve been throwing for the last week and feel great.”

Triple-A Vancouver outfielder Jim Edmonds (.320, nine homers and 73 RBIs) and reliever Darryl Scott (7-0, 1.94 ERA, 15 saves) will be called up to the Angels before their Sept. 7 trip to Detroit and Toronto, Rodgers said.
