OUTLOOK

If Alemany had a team full of returning starters, it might have a chance to finish third in this highly competitive league. But, with a lineup that could include 13 juniors, the Indians will probably have a long season. Pantoja, who has an average arm, started on the frosh-soph team last season. He will be mostly handing off to Van Holten and Eastham. Five of Alemany’s losses in 1992 were by seven points or fewer, but coming close will be no solace for Degnan this season. “Playing teams tough doesn’t get it,” Degnan said.

FAST FACT

The Celts have lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of Lins’ four seasons as coach.

OUTLOOK

Lins said the Celts’ strength is a defense that returns eight starters. But that defense allowed an average of 339.6 yards per game. Two of the leaders are top recruits Williams and McElroy, and both will contribute by running the football as well. Dave Lins, no relation to the coach, attempted only one pass last season, when he was the starting safety. Bishop Amat and Loyola, the defending Division I champion and runner-up, are again the favorites in the league, but Tim Lins said he believes the Celts can win it.
