ALOFT: A Meditation on Pigeons & Pigeon Flying by Stephen Bodio (Pruett: $12.95; 84 pp., illustrated). In this agreeable memoir, Bodio reflects on his fascination with pigeons: Beginning as an adolescent in Boston, he has raised, raced and eaten them. He describes the characteristics of various breeds and the excitement of racing them over distances of up to 600 miles in affectionate detail. Although fanciers have kept pigeons for thousands of years, city dwellers who have experienced them only as nuisances may be less susceptible to their supposed charms.
