As soon as he heard the news, Mark Langston phoned good friend Jim Abbott to congratulate him on his no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians.

“That’s great,” Angel Manager Buck Rodgers said of Abbott’s first no-hitter. “He’s had a tough year. It’s something he can be happy about and build on for next year.”

Joe Grahe’s save Friday was his first since May 23 at Texas and his first at Anaheim Stadium since May 15 against Kansas City. Injuries to his neck and shoulder have limited his effectiveness.

“Joe Grahe is a mystery,” Rodgers said. “For most of the year, I couldn’t use him two days in a row. Now on the last road trip, he says he can throw two days in a row.”
