A 31-year-old Somis man was arrested Monday on suspicion of carjacking a vehicle in Camarillo, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Marc Standley was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of robbery and auto theft.

The incident began about 12:30 p.m. after a couple parked in front of a store at 506 N. Las Posas Road. While the man went into the store, the unidentified woman remained in the passenger seat of the car.

The suspect got into the driver’s side of the car, started the engine and began to drive away, the spokesman said. The woman got out and called for help.

Several patrol cars and a sheriff’s helicopter began searching for the 1983 Datsun. They located the car on Wendy Drive in Newbury Park about 12:40 p.m. The engine had caught fire and the driver had fled on foot.

Searching a residential area on the south side of the Ventura Freeway, officers found Standley hiding under debris in a back yard.
