Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Search Called Off for Man Who Fell Into an Aqueduct

Share

Search-and-rescue teams dredged the California Aqueduct in Palmdale on Monday looking for a man who had fallen into the canal, but called off the search by early evening.

The man, who was not identified, fell into the aqueduct at 9 a.m. while he and his 5-year-old son fished near 60th Street West, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Shreves. The son, who saw his father fall in, called to nearby adults who then called the Sheriff’s Department, Shreves said.

The aqueduct has gates every few miles that could catch large objects, Shreves said. But it was unclear if the gates were closed or how far upstream from a gate the man was when he fell in, he said. Authorities said they did not know if the search would be resumed today.
