Robert Williams of South Pasadena has been named communications director of the six-county Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

Williams oversees print, broadcast and public relations programs linking some 85,000 parishioners, 450 clergy, 148 congregations, 39 schools and 10 major institutions in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

He is a parishioner of All Saints Church and a board member of Hillsides Home for Children, both in Pasadena, and a board member of St. Barnabas Senior Services, Los Angeles.

Peter Palermo of La Canada Flintridge will be honored by the Pasadena YMCA as the 26th recipient of the Man of the Year award at a banquet today at the University Club in Pasadena.

Palermo joined the group’s Men’s Club in 1965 and became the club’s president in 1970. He served on the YMCA board of directors and was president in 1984 and ’85.

Palermo is involved with other community programs such as the Tournament of Roses, La Canada Kiwanis and the Pasadena Quarterbacks. He is a founding board member of the La Canada Flintridge Education Foundation.

The Pasadena YMCA provides sports, fitness, child care, camping and leadership development programs for children and adults in the northwest San Gabriel Valley.

Shirley Mae Leopold is the winner of Las Encinas Hospital’s 1993 First Humanitarian Award.

Las Encinas, a Hospital Corp. of America (HCA) psychiatric facility, annually honors employees for their dedication to giving quality, compassionate care in a manner that rewards communities, physicians, employees and, most important, patients, officials there said. First Humanitarian Award winners are selected by their peers at each HCA hospital.

Leopold has been involved in community work as well. She was a member of the Arcadia PTA and was honored as an outstanding volunteer at Highland Oaks Elementary School in Arcadia. She has also organized food drives for the needy through Las Encinas and other local organizations.

Debby Giesler Bowes has been named director of the Education Center at Pasadena’s Hillsides Home for Children. Hillsides is a nonprofit residence and treatment center for abused, abandoned and neglected children.

Bowes’ previous experience includes administrative positions in the Arcadia and Alhambra school districts. She received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in elementary education from Cal State Los Angeles. She was awarded a doctorate in curriculum and instruction at USC.

Kathleen Bartle-Schulweis will join Caltech this month as the director of the Institute’s newly established Women’s Center. She will be responsible for identifying the needs of campus women, implementing a program to meet those needs, and promoting the education and careers for all women at Caltech.

Since 1989, Bartle-Schulweis served as director of the Office for Women’s Issues and the campus Women’s Issues Advocate at USC. She developed and coordinated educational programs on rape sexual harassment, domestic violence and campus safety. She also developed policies and programs aimed at increasing awareness of, and sensitivity to, gender issues on campus.
