Hogs Take Taneyhill Down a Notch : SEC: South Carolina and its star quarterback are upstaged as Arkansas wins, 18-17.

Quarterback Barry Lunney Jr. dropped to one knee and, yards behind him, wide receiver Tracy Caldwell blasted an imaginary home run into the stands as Arkansas secured an 18-17 victory over South Carolina Saturday.

Caldwell said he and the other Arkansas players came away with definite impressions after watching film of South Carolina quarterback Steve Taneyhill.

“He’s a big, flamboyant-type dude,” Caldwell said. “Every time he does something, he’s got to (gesture as if he) hit a home run. So we just hit one on him today.”

“I thought it was hilarious,” Arkansas tight end Kirk Botkin said. “Nobody likes somebody that’s real cocky. He’s a great player, but it was an extra incentive.”

Oscar Malone scored on a two-yard run with 1:57 to play as Arkansas overcame an 11-point deficit to beat the Gamecocks.

South Carolina led, 17-6, early in the third quarter, but Lunney threw a five-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Meadors early in the fourth quarter and the Arkansas defense put the clamps on Taneyhill.

The Gamecocks (1-1 overall and in the Southeastern Conference) managed only three yards in the fourth quarter after gaining 292 in the first three. The loss was only the second for South Carolina since Taneyhill became the starter eight games ago.

Malone, who gained 141 yards inn 22 carries, scored with 39 seconds remaining last week as Arkansas (2-0, 1-0) beat Southern Methodist, 10-6.
