North Carolina produced its biggest offensive showing ever on Saturday. Because of Maryland’s Scott Milanovich, the 14th-ranked Tar Heels needed every yard.

The Tar Heels set a school total offense record of 714 yards behind quarterback Jason Stanicek’s near-flawless first-half performance. Milanovich stole the spotlight in the second half and got Maryland close before North Carolina put away a 59-42 victory at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina plays host to No. 1 Florida State next Saturday.

“I don’t think I’ve been around a game with as many big plays,” North Carolina Coach Mack Brown said. “The problem is they were on both sides of the ball.”

North Carolina got its share of big plays in the first half as Stanicek completed 14 of 17 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns to help the Tar Heels take a 38-21 halftime lead. He directed North Carolina (3-0, 1-0) to a third-quarter touchdown when Leon Johnson scored from a yard out on fourth down with 9:22 left.

Milanovich completed 18 of 24 passes in the second half for 198 yards and three touchdowns, finishing 34 of 50 for 405 yards. Jermaine Lewis caught nine passes for 250 yards.

North Carolina’s 714 yards broke the school mark of 675 set against Virginia Military Institute in 1969. Curtis Johnson ran for 168 yards in 17 carries and Leon Johnson got 101 yards in 16 carries. For the second straight week, the Johnsons surpassed the 100-yard mark, the first time that’s happened in consecutive games.
