Hansen Edges Hendrix in Photo Finish

Scott Hansen of Simi Valley passed Rick Hendrix of Simi Valley on the final straightaway to win the 20-lap USAC three-quarter Midget main-event in a photo finish Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway.

Hansen nudged even with Hendrix, who had led the entire race, on the final turn of the 20th lap before taking the checkered flag. Hansen remains in third place in the divisional point standings behind Bellflower’s J.J. Ercse and Ventura’s Kenny White.

Walt Johnson of Sun Valley won the three quarters 12-lap semi-main. San Gabriel’s Jim Voitle, Ventura’s Randy Moody, Monrovia’s Cal Smith and Ercse also recorded three-quarter heat wins.

John Cofer of Macdoel also won the 20-lap midget main event. The victory propelled Cofer from eighth place to sixth in the Midget point standings.

Cofer and Val Verde’s Jay Drake each won Midget heat races.

The multi-modified and single-modified Midgets made a rare Ventura appearance. Riverside’s R.J. Martinez won the 20-lap multi main event. Justin Martella of Hanford won the 20-lap single modified main.

Bill Bartels of Los Angeles won the 20-lap Street Stock main event in racing at Ventura, followed by Santa Barbara’s James Weston and Goleta’s Paul Moore. Bartels remains in third place in the points standings behind Moore and Weston.

Moore, Agoura’s Scott Niven and Ventura’s Randy McGraw won heat races. Weston added a victory in the street stock trophy dash.

Gary Swenson of Ventura won the 15-lap Mini-Stock main-event. Port Hueneme’s Joe Silva and Somis’ Tim Gill each won heat races. Silva also won the figure-eight oval main event.

Oak View driver Scott Boucher won the 15-lap Pony Stock main-event. Points leader Mira Cook of Camarillo and Filmore’s Mike Campbell won heat races.
