GLENDALE : Woman Dies When Truck Crushes Car

Share

A truck carrying crates of milk and orange juice crashed and crushed a car Thursday morning, killing the woman driver and sending an infant believed to be her son to the hospital.

The Glendale woman, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene at the southwest corner of Harvey Drive and the Ventura Freeway, said Sgt. Lief Nicolaisen of the Glendale Police Department. The woman’s identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Investigators believe that the Kozy Farms truck was traveling west on the Ventura Freeway at 9:12 a.m. when it exited at Harvey Drive and failed to stop for a red light, striking two vehicles, Nicolaisen said.

The 4-month-old boy, who was in a children’s car seat, suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and released.

“There’s no doubt that this child safety seat saved this child’s life,” Nicolaisen said.

Also treated and released from Glendale Adventist was Irma Patrocina, 45, of Sun Valley, the driver of the other car struck by the truck. The 22-year-old truck driver, Ricardo Rodriguez Ruiz, was treated and released from Glendale Memorial Hospital.

Ruiz told police he was unable to stop because his brakes failed. But witnesses told officers the truck was speeding, Nicolaisen said.
