The City Council hired Greg Hulsizer as city manager, replacing interim City Manager Stephen B. Julian, who was dividing his time between Stanton and a job as the interim city manager of Dana Point.

Hulsizer, 39, was a deputy city manager for Fontana and was community development director from 1990 until February, when he resigned to begin a consulting firm.

Councilman Joe V. Harris took Hulsizer to the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon Thursday. Hulsizer also met with city employees. “There’s a real professional and yet family atmosphere at City Hall,” he said.

Hulsizer is expected to begin work Monday. His pay is $85,000 plus benefits. Previous City Manager Terry Matz, who resigned to take another job in March, was paid $74,000 and benefits.

“I think he’s going to get the job done for us,” said Harris. “We’re going to join hands and see what we can pull out of the hat.”

Council member Sal Sapien said: “He’s young, but he’s got a lot of experience.”

Hulsizer was employed by the city of San Clemente from 1973 to 1990, working his way up from lifeguard to assistant city manager. He also acted as interim city manager in 1989.

“I intend to do a lot of listening and spend time with staff and members of the community,” Hulsizer said. He said he was interested in the challenge of bringing economic opportunity to Stanton, which has a population of about 30,000.

Hulsizer lives in San Clemente with his wife and two daughters.

He founded Transition Management Associates based in San Clemente. The firm specializes in strategic planning and organizational development, mostly for cities and other public organizations, Hulsizer said.
