WEEKEND TV : Stages Set for Miss America, Emmy Awards

Share

Two big awards shows highlight the viewing choices this weekend.

The Miss America Pageant unfolds at 10 tonight on NBC (Channels 4, 36 and 39), with Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford hosting. The organizers have tried to freshen the show by banning hair stylists and makeup workers backstage, allowing the contestants to wear pantsuits instead of formal dresses and revising the interview format.

On Sunday, Angela Lansbury will host the Emmy Awards on ABC at 8 p.m. (Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42)--a gracious move on her part considering that she’s been nominated for the television industry’s coveted statuette 12 times without winning. She’s up again this year for No. 13.

President Clinton’s health care plan and the North American Free Trade Agreement will be serious topics of discussion on most public affairs programs.
