BURBANK : Strict Changes Added to School Dress Code

Share

Keeping in step with John Burroughs High School, Burbank High has also refined its dress code to deal with gang members and taggers, Principal Keiko Hentell said.

Because low-slung baggy pants, although fashionable among many teen-agers, can denote gang affiliation, the new code forbids wearing pants below the natural waistline. It also prohibits “tagger related clothing” but does not define what such clothing might be.

The dress code, as part of school safety guidelines, had already forbidden gang-related clothing but without naming specific types of clothing.

The changes were approved Thursday by students, administrators, parents and community members who sit on the school site committee. The new change will become effective in October.

Burbank High does not go as far as John Burroughs, which bans baggy pants whether or not they hang below the waist. However, the school did ban weapons and tagging equipment, such as spray cans or markers.
