Deputy Accidentally Shoots Himself
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot himself in the knee Friday after he slipped on a shooting range in Castaic, authorities said.
Robert Smith, 36, was wounded shortly before 8 a.m. at a training range at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, sheriff’s spokesman Gabe Ramirez said.
Smith, a 13-year veteran of the department, was holding a 9-millimeter Beretta semiautomatic pistol when he slipped and fell backward, firing a bullet into his left knee, Ramirez said.
Smith is in good condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Ramirez said.
