REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Dilfer, Rivers Lead Fresno State

Quarterback Trent Dilfer threw for three touchdowns and Ron Rivers ran for a career-high 205 yards Saturday as Fresno State rolled up 570 yards of total offense in a 41-24 win over New Mexico.

The Bulldogs (2-1 overall, 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) ran through New Mexico’s generous defense and took control of the WAC game with back-to-back third quarter scoring drives.

Rivers went 46 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter to erase a 24-17 New Mexico halftime lead. The Bulldogs then put together a 96-yard touchdown drive in 13 plays, ending with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Dilfer to Brian Roberson.

Fresno State went into the game averaging more than 503 yards per game. The Bulldogs had 37 first downs, equaling the most ever given up by a New Mexico team.

Jamal Willis ran for two touchdowns and caught a key third-down pass in the closing minutes as No. 19 Brigham Young (3-0, 3-0 in WAC) held off Colorado State (1-2, 1-1), 27-22, at Fort Collins, Colo. . . . Nick Isaacson ran for 124 yards as Harvard (1-0) defeated Columbia (0-1), 30-3, at Boston. . . . Keith Elias rushed for 188 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead defending Ivy League co-champion Princeton (1-0) to an 18-12 victory over Cornell (0-1) at Princeton, N.J. . . . Mike McCoy’s two touchdown passes to Henry Lusk helped Utah (2-1) take a 21-0 first-quarter lead and cruise past Kansas (1-3), 41-16, at Lawrence, Kan. . . . Cincinnati (2-1) converted two fumbles into touchdowns and defeated Miami, Ohio (1-2), 30-23, at Cincinnati.

Freshman Jake Delhomme completed two touchdown passes and Southwestern Louisiana (1-2) beat Memphis State (1-2), 17-15, at Lafayette, La. . . . Spence Fischer had his second straight 300-yard passing performance to help Duke (1-2) to a 42-21 victory over Army (1-1) at Durham, N.C. . . . Tulane (1-2) shut out an opponent for the first time in 20 years with a 10-0 victory over William & Mary (1-2) at New Orleans. . . . John Leach rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown to lead Wake Forest (1-2) to a 20-3 victory over Appalachian State (0-3) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

SOUTHWEST

Bert Emanuel and Yoncy Edmonds scored touchdowns to give Rice (2-1) a 14-13 victory over Sam Houston State (0-2) at Houston. . . . Jason Gildon’s sack caused a fumble with 25 seconds left and preserved a 16-10 victory for visiting Oklahoma State over Tulsa. The Cowboys are 2-0.

Joe Hughes passes for three touchdowns as Wyoming (2-1) defeated San Jose State (0-3), 36-25, and spoiled the home debut of John Ralston, who returned to college coaching this year after a 22-year absence. . . .
