BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Young Pitchers to Get Starts

Manager Buck Rodgers and Vice President Whitey Herzog will begin a new program of having the organization’s best young pitchers starting instead of coming out of the bullpen. Each has been concerned by the number of arm injuries suffered by young pitchers.

“We have to send our good arms out and have them throw 100 to 120 innings,” Rodgers said. “Whitey’s idea is to get the good arms starting, so they learn how to start, and pitch out of jams. Some of them haven’t pitched into September before.”

Rodgers said he’s in no hurry to give Brian Anderson, the Angels’ No. 1 draft pick, a start. “It’s not a priority,” he said. Anderson has made only one relief appearance since coming up from triple-A Vancouver on Sept. 7. . . . Infielder Jim Walewander made his first major league start since Oct. 3, 1990, when he was a member of the New York Yankees. Center fielder Chad Curtis made his major league debut at second when he replaced Walewander in the eighth inning. Curtis was an all-star second baseman when he played at double-A Midland. . . . Rookie catcher Chris Turner had three singles, the first three-hit game of his brief major league career. . . . Sunday’s game lasted 3 hours 47 minutes, the longest nine-inning home game in Angel history.
