Expectations ran high when Bill Redell was named football coach at St. Francis, but no one expected the Golden Knights to start the season with shutouts over Burroughs and Mary Star of the Sea.

St. Francis figures to be tested Friday when the Golden Knights play host to Loyola, the Times’ top-ranked team in Southern California.

Sean Evans, who guided the La Canada girls’ basketball team to three consecutive Rio Hondo League championships, has resigned as coach of the Spartans.

Evans, 28, compiled a record of 62-21. Last season, La Canada lost to Rancho Alamitos in the Southern Section 3-A semifinals.

La Canada’s girls’ volleyball team, ranked second in the Southern Section’s Division V, won the Hawthorne tournament last weekend by defeating Burroughs, 15-11, in the one-game final.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

After a bye last week, Glendale College’s football team resumes its schedule tonight with a Western State Conference opener against Valley College at Burroughs High.

Glendale opened its season two weeks ago with a 20-16 victory over Citrus College.

Glendale is led by quarterback Chris Ray, who passed for two touchdowns against Citrus, and running backs Pathon Rucker and Jerome Casey.

Rucker gained 51 yards in 16 carries and Casey carried six times for 45 yards against Citrus.

Glendale’s women’s volleyball team entered the week 0-1 after a season-opening loss to Pierce.

Glendale, under Coach George Rodriguez, was led by Claudia Henry, who had 12 kills.

COLLEGES

Occidental College’s football team travels to San Antonio, Tex., on Saturday for a game against Trinity College.

Occidental opened its season last Saturday with a 14-6 nonconference victory over Azusa Pacific. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth quarter on a four-yard run by quarterback Davin Lundquist and an 11-yard run by Brian Madlangbayan.

Madlangbayan, a senior from Oceanside, gained 120 yards in 15 carries, including a run of 58 yards.

Lundquist had a 40-yard average for nine punts.

Occidental’s women’s volleyball team is ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III West region this week.

The Tigers, under second-year Coach Jeff Campbell, entered the week with an 8-3 record after finishing second in the Pomona Pitzer tournament last weekend. Occidental finished 5-1 in the tournament, losing the championship match against Pomona Pitzer.

Kim Dunsmoor of Occidental was selected to the all-tournament team.

Occidental travels to San Diego on Friday to participate in the UC San Diego tournament.

Occidental’s cross-country teams will compete in the Riverside Invitational this week after opening the season last weekend at the Fresno Invitational.

Occidental’s men’s team finished sixth in Fresno. Fred Ballon was the Tigers’ top finisher in 20th place.

Becky Kopchick led the Occidental women to a fifth-place finish by finishing fourth overall.

Occidental’s women’s soccer team is off to its best start in school history under second-year Coach Costa Nicholaou.

The Tigers, who play Cal Lutheran on Saturday, entered the week 4-1 with three shutouts. Occidental defeated Redlands, 1-0, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match last weekend. Sophomore Dawn Goodwin scored the goal for Occidental.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Hung Huynh, Hoover--Hung, a 5-foot-5, 135-pound running back, gained 159 yards in 30 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Tornadoes in a 29-24 loss to South Pasadena.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Brian Madlangbayan, Occidental--Madlangbayan, a senior running back, gained 120 yards in 15 carries and scored a touchdown for the Tigers in their 14-6 nonconference victory over Azusa Pacific.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament that will benefit the Hemophilia Foundation of Southern California is scheduled Oct. 18 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Information: (800) 371-4123. . . . Registration for the American Roundball Corp. Fall League will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. at North Hollywood High.
