City officials today will unveil two signs to mark the boundaries of the mile-long stretch of West Coast Highway known as Mariner’s Mile.

Encompassing the site of Newport’s first landing in 1870, the historic business district is now dominated by car dealerships, high-rise buildings and restaurants. To point the area out to motorists, two custom-made signs with the words “Mariner’s Mile” and the city’s logo will be installed on the West Coast Highway at either end of the district.

The stretch of road extends from Newport Boulevard to Dover Drive on the West Coast Highway. The signs will be paid for by the city and the business association.
