A 24-year-old Oxnard man was arrested in connection with an armed street robbery over the weekend after he sought treatment for a wound in his leg, police said.

Victor Vanzant was taken into custody at his home Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of robbing Rodrigo Hurtado, 34, at knife point. The robbery occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday near Spruce and G streets in Oxnard.

Vanzant was being held in County Jail without bail for allegedly violating his state parole, authorities said.

Hurtado told police he was robbed by three men who beat him and took his wallet while holding a knife to his throat.

During the robbery, an unidentified resident ran to help Hurtado and fired one round from his shotgun. That round apparently hit Vanzant and another suspect, Oxnard Sgt. John Crombach said.

Officers Bruce Reed and Robert Cox later connected Vanzant to the robbery after he showed up at St. John’s Regional Medical Center around 9:30 a.m. Sunday seeking treatment for a shotgun wound.

When questioned about his wound, Vanzant told Cox that he had been the victim of a random drive-by shooting, Crombach said.
