BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Injuries Don’t Slow Nebraska, 48-13

Quarterback Tommie Frazier passed for two touchdowns and ran for one Saturday, leading injury-riddled and sixth-ranked Nebraska to a 48-13 nonconference victory over Colorado State at Lincoln, Neb.

The Cornhuskers (4-0) entered the game with a long list of injured players, but the injuries appeared to have little impact on the game. Nebraska, which had a 43-0 halftime lead in a 71-14 victory over the Rams two years ago, had a 28-3 halftime advantage this time.

Frazier, a sophomore, ran 11 times for 75 yards and completed seven of 13 passes for 79 yards as Nebraska gained 379 yards.

“I don’t think we’re where we want to be,” Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. “But considering the things that have happened, it’s not too bad. The big thing now is to get people healed up.”

Toby Wright put the Huskers on the board before the game was a minute old with a 32-yard interception return.

Freshman running back Lawrence Phillips added a seven-yard scoring run and Frazier ran 16 yards for a touchdown and lofted a one-yard pass to tight end Gerald Armstrong for another.

Frazier connected from 41 yards with Abdul Muhammad in the third quarter, then left the game to rest the right ankle he sprained in the season opener against North Texas.

Colorado State (1-3) could manage only field goals of 43 and 42 yards by David Napier against the Nebraska regulars. Leodis Brown ran eight yards for a touchdown with 3:53 remaining.

Kansas State 36, UNLV 20-- J.J. Smith scored two touchdowns and Andre Coleman broke loose on a 67-yard scoring play as the Wildcats won at Manhattan, Kan., to finish its nonconference schedule unbeaten for the first time in 39 years.

Kansas State fell behind 14-10 at halftime but scored a touchdown, a field goal and a safety to regain control of the Rebels (1-3) in the third quarter.

The Wildcats’ nine-game home winning streak is one shy of the school record and the 4-0 start is the best since 1931.

West Virginia 35, Missouri 3-- Quarterback Jake Kelchner passed for 182 yards and three touchdowns, including an 83-yarder, at Morgantown, W.Va., as the Mountaineers (3-0) handed the Tigers (1-2) their 12th consecutive road loss.

Kelchner also scrambled for 61 yards to set up a score as West Virginia, off to its best start since 1989, scored 28 second-half points.

Missouri has turned the ball over 12 times in losing its last two games by a combined 108-3. Missouri averted its first back-to-back shutouts since 1966 with a 36-yard field goal by Kyle Pooler with 4:17 left.
