PRO FOOTBALL : Reveiz Kick-Starts Vikings : NFC: His five field goals, the last with six seconds remaining, lead Minnesota to a 15-13 victory over Green Bay.

Jim McMahon completed a 45-yard pass to Eric Guliford with six seconds to play, setting up Fuad Reveiz’s fifth field goal, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied Sunday for a 15-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Reveiz missed a 49-yard attempt with 2:40 left when the ball bounced off the crossbar.

“I was thankful to get a second opportunity,” Reveiz said. “I was angry with myself. I usually don’t come up short from that range.”

In its previous game, Green Bay (1-2) let Philadelphia pull even on a long pass and win on a field goal with five seconds remaining.

This time, the Packers let Guliford--a rookie free-agent receiver--get wide open for Minnesota (2-1) in his first play from scrimmage all season.

“It was a mirage,” said Green Bay safety LeRoy Butler, who was responsible for deep coverage on the play. “How we’re playing right now, we might never win. We’ve been giving away more gifts than Santa Claus.”

On third and 10 from the 50 with 14 seconds remaining, McMahon rolled right to avoid the rush before connecting with Guliford, who went six more yards before Mike Prior pushed him out of bounds.

Reveiz kicked the game-winning 22-yarder on the next play.

“Terrell Buckley said on the play before that, ‘McMahon can’t throw it that far,’ ” McMahon said, referring to Green Bay’s cornerback. “Well, they should cover a guy going deep.”

Guliford entered the game because Qadry Ismail was spent after running several long patterns. Receiver Cris Carter--not the coaches--called for Guliford to replace Ismail.

“We give our guys freedom to make that kind of call, especially in that kind of scramble situation,” said Brian Billick, in his debut since replacing fired offensive coordinator Jack Burns.

Then it was up to McMahon, whose 16-yard touchdown pass to Carter with 8:17 remaining gave the Vikings a victory over Chicago two weeks ago.

McMahon completed 18 of 35 passes for 217 yards, but no touchdowns. The Vikings have only two touchdowns all season.

Reveiz, who has been bothered by an ankle injury, also connected from 35, 19, 29 and 51 yards.

In the first quarter, the Packers used 14 plays to go 85 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown on Brett Favre’s two-yard run.

Favre completed 20 of 31 passes for 150 yards.

Minnesota’s final possession began at its 17 with 1:53 remaining. Facing fourth and eight at the 19, McMahon connected with Carter for 19 yards. Later, on third and three, he connected with Carter for three yards. McMahon missed badly on his next two passes before connecting with Guliford.
