Dwayne Schintzius, a 7-foot-2 center, signed an offer sheet to play for the Milwaukee Bucks for two years. Schintzius’ previous team, the New Jersey Nets, has until Oct. 13 to respond to the offer sheet and retain his rights.

Tennis

Martina Navratilova, 37 next month, said she has decided that 1994 will be her final year to play singles.

“This is it--period,” Navratilova told a New York news conference for the Virginia Slims Championships. “Next year will be my last year. It’s time for me to move on.”

Navratilova still will play a full schedule in 1994, including the French Open, which she hasn’t entered since 1988. But she also said she would skip the Australian Open. Ranked No. 3, Navratilova has won four singles titles this year, boosting her career total to a record 165. She left open the option to play doubles and mixed doubles after 1994.

Soccer

Zambia accused the West African nation of Gabon of obstructing its investigation into a plane crash that killed 18 Zambian soccer players.

A Zambia air force plane carrying most of the national soccer team plunged into the sea after a refueling stop in Gabon on April 28.

Miscellany

Atlanta Falcon cornerback Bruce Pickens was charged with rape in Atlanta. Pickens, 25, was served with papers charging him with one count of rape but was not taken into custody. Pickens was at practice and said he was innocent. He will be arraigned Oct. 25. According to police, a 26-year-old woman told police that Pickens raped her in his apartment after she left an Atlanta nightclub in a car driven by Pickens.

Bryan Trottier, 37, who retired a year ago, announced he is returning to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Trottier, the sixth-leading scorer in NHL history, played for six Stanley Cup champion teams and retired after the 1992 season to work in the New York Islanders’ administration.

Alan Eagleson, former president of the NHL players’ union, and his businesses and associates had agreements worth more than $1.25 million for work on the Canada Cup and other international tournaments, according to a published report. As an international hockey promoter, Eagleson needed the approval of NHL owners to use NHL players in the games. As union chief, Eagleson had to negotiate with the same owners on behalf of the players.

Tom Duke, who led USC to the 1988 NCAA men’s volleyball championship, has rejoined the U.S. national team on an extended tryout basis through the remainder of the 1993 season after a two-year hiatus. Duke, a 6-6 middle blocker, played with the national team in 1990 and spent the last two seasons playing beach volleyball.

Jaha Wilson of San Francisco, one of USC’s top freshman basketball recruits, underwent a medical procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat. Wilson, a 6-5, 215-pound forward, was found to have Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a rare heart disease that is not considered life threatening. Reggie Perry, a USC defensive back, had the same surgery performed last April after he had an episode during spring drills.
