PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Falcons, Sanders Talking Contract

Associated Press

The Atlanta Falcons are talking with defensive back Deion Sanders about whether to extend his contract, according to his agent. Sanders is playing for the Atlanta Braves.

Falcon President Taylor Smith had lunch with Sanders on Thursday, in the wake of the team’s 0-4 start, its worst since 1985. The meeting came less than two weeks after Smith conceded that the Falcons might not be able to afford the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, given the NFL’s pending salary cap.

“I think given everything that’s going on, and the doubts about what will happen with Deion’s situation, it was good that they talked,” Sanders’ agent, Eugene Parker, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “More than anything else, it was just an opportunity for each of them to express their feelings. Where it goes from here . . . I don’t think anyone can say yet.”

Smith could not be reached for comment.

If the Braves fail to win the NL West title, the earliest Sanders would be available to the Falcons would be Oct. 14, when they play the Rams.

If the Braves advance to the World Series, Sanders would skip the Falcons’ first seven games and not be available until Oct. 31.
