SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For a moment, Canyon High appeared poised to run away with its fourth consecutive victory. But after Canyon’s Ed Williams ran for a 75-touchdown on the Cowboys’ first possession, the game ran away from the Cowboys who were defeated by Quartz Hill, 25-14.

Quartz Hill’s Brad Norris completed 18 of 33 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown in the Rebels’ fourth straight victory.

Canyon (3-1) controlled the game throughout the first half, but was unable to cling to a 14-7 halftime lead.

“We just gave up,” Canyon quarterback Sean Connelly said. “We didn’t play as a team in the second half and it started with me.”

Connelly completed eight of 18 passes for 82 yards.

Quartz Hill recovered from Williams’ run by scoring in the second quarter after Norris ran the ball 14 yards to the one-yard line.

Brad Breckenridge, who ran 10 times for 55 yards and also caught four passes for 45 yards, plunged in for the Rebels (4-0).

But in the same now-you-see-him, now-you-don’t fashion as before, Williams, who carried 15 times for 160 yards, took a screen pass from Connelly 68 yards to the Quartz Hill two-yard line. Freddy Polito, who ran only seven times for 12 yards, then scored to put the Cowboys up, 14-7, at the half.

On the Cowboys’ first possession of the third quarter, Erik Williams intercepted Connelly’s pass at the 27-yard line to turn the game around.

Jeff Diamond scored on a 46-yard draw, and a two-point conversion pass from Jeremy Sanders to Gary Brooks put the Rebels up for the remainder of the game.

“The offense let down in the second half, and then the defense let down too,” Connelly said. “It’s a team reaction. It all started with the interception.”

Norris completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Andy Rethi on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Keith Lilley’s 20-yard field goal finished off the Rebels’ scoring.
