In the San Marcos volleyball tournament:

Laguna Beach 15, Mater Dei 12--Laguna Beach fell behind , 10-7 , but rallied for the title. Tournament MVP Hilary Kyle of Laguna Beach had 108 kills in the eight games. Mater Dei’s Roberta Gehlke and Allison Stricklin also were named to the all-tournament team.

At the Stanford Invitational cross-country meet:

Nelson, Edison win--Canyon’s Kim Nelson ran to a 22-second victory and Edison placed five among the top 25 for the team title in the girls’ Division II competition at the Stanford Golf Course.

Nelson covered the three-mile course in 18 minutes 40 seconds to beat Nicole Silva of Aptos. Taryn Lawson of Ocean View was third in 19:22, with teammate Kenna Masuda sixth in 19:31.

Kerry O’Bric was seventh, seven seconds behind Masuda, to lead Edison, which finished with 67 points to 83 for Canyon. Ocean View was fourth.

In the girls’ Division III race, Dresden Howell was first in 19:08 and teammate Tracy Clark third in 19:27 as Corona del Mar finished second in the team competition with 78 points to 64 for St. Ignatius.

Esperanza (111) and Irvine (149) finished third and fourth behind winner Bend (36) in girls’ Division I. Irvine’s Jessica Corbin was eighth in 19:13 and Esperanza’s Courtney Pugmire 10th in 19:23.

In girls’ Division IV, Orange Lutheran was second with 85 points to 63 for Morro Bay. Orange Lutheran’s Laurie Juranek was sixth in 20:31.

In boys’ Division III, Sonora’s Darren Holman was third in 15:53, and Corona del Mar was fifth in the team race with 152 points to 119 for first-place Livermore. The Sea Kings’ Brian Slingsby was 13th in 16:24.

In the Villa Park water polo tournament:

El Toro 11, San Clemente 8--El Toro (12-1) won the championship behind three goals from Brent Stoll and two from Brandon Stout.

Phinney Gardner of San Clemente (10-3) scored five goals, all in the first half. But El Toro’s Bill Pinciroli was switched to guard Gardner in the second half and did not allow him to score again.

Stoll led all scorers in the tournament with 15 goals, Pinciroli had 12 and Stout 11.

South Pasadena 7, Foothill 5--After a hard-fought, 10-9 overtime loss to San Clemente in the semifinals, Foothill (8-5) fell in the third-place game.
