Weary and beaten, the Mighty Ducks returned to Anaheim Arena on Monday, only to be beaten again, 7-2, as Detroit’s Steve Yzerman’s scored a hat trick.

The Red Wings led, 3-0, after the first period, and Yzerman scored his third goal with 38 seconds remaining in the second when he flipped a wrist shot over goaltender Guy Hebert’s left shoulder.

Hebert faced 47 shots as the Red Wings flattened the tired Ducks, who returned Sunday from a six-game, 14-day trip that took them through a blizzard in the Midwest.

“We made it tough on ourselves tonight--and on Guy,” Coach Ron Wilson said.

The Ducks, who have won only one of their last 15 games, began to show their frustration in the third period when Stu Grimson and Todd Ewen each squared off with Detroit enforcer Bob Probert. Penalties plagued the Ducks, who gave up three power-play goals and suffered from the absence of defenseman Alexei Kasatonov, who has the flu.

Tim Sweeney and Joe Sacco scored for the Ducks, but leading scorer Terry Yake was held without a point for the ninth consecutive game.

“We’re not finishing our chances,” Wilson said. “We’re not skilled enough to waste chances like the ones we did tonight.”
